Home Depot tentatively has reached a deal to sell its wholesale supply business to a group of private-equity buyers for $1.8 billion less than originally planned, according to a news report Sunday. Atlanta-based Home Depot also will retain a small ownership stake in the unit, the New York Times reported Sunday evening. A Home Depot spokeswoman declined to comment.

ATLANTA, Aug. 26 — Home Depot has tentatively agreed to sell its wholesale distribution business to a group of private-equity firms for $1.8 billion less than originally planned, and it will retain a small stake in the unit, a person with direct knowledge of the situation said Sunday.
