This is one of the most neglected areas. We just emphasize on communication but ultimately communication should be effective. To achieve this purpose one must have the exclusive communication skills. Communication can basically be divided into two parts. Oral and Written. Both these types have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Oral communication has the bonus of expressions as it directly conveys the emotions at other end. But at the same time you have to extremely careful before saying every single word because it is most common type of communication and in this communication every single gesture matters.
Written communication lacks the effective transfer of emotions but it gives you time to always have a look what you are going to do. Especially when we talk about business than to make every deal legal the written communication plays it part. The sharing of important information on the internet should be done very cautiously because your competitors can use it if you don’t use some trusted source or some encryption software.
Both of above discussed communications can’t be neglected. But oral communication is more important when you have a direct contact with the other part and when other part is far off than written communication is in common practice. While working online you have to keep following things in mind while communicating with the other party
- You should be well aware of the culture of other party. Something appreciated in a society can be taken offensive in other.
- Words can mean different to different persons. So always write in detail, explain each and every thing.
- Avoid using the slang. Slang directly points towards non-professionalism. Sometime the other party is not familiar with slang and it can be very irritating and can harm the business.
- Every single word you post become legal and you cannot pull back. Therefore; think a million times before making any deal.
- Always give something extra; this can work amazingly for you. For example you are working with a party and you complete your project with them. At the end tell them in detail about your skills. Also send them samples of your work. This is my personal experience that it brings more work for you. What you have to do is just have to describe your abilities.
A special case of small-group interaction occurs in organizations where there is work to do or a task for the group to perform. Or several small groups may need to interact among each other within a single organization. In these cases, the groups must communicate well, both among themselves and with other groups, so that their members can perform their work effectively and make good decisions. Therefore, small-group communication skills can be as necessary as conversation skills in the workplace or other organizational activities. This is extremely important for the completion and coordination among members. This is not necessarily meant to be direct as nowadays companies have the practice of virtual offices.
So communication skills can save a lot for you and even sometimes bring a lot for you.
